DEAR EMMY ELDERS:
By Karen Crackpot

So much for the new voting system. I realize that the rules changed in an attempt to nominate fresh shows and cult favorites, and you now choose the nominees from a list of contenders. But I have no idea who chooses those contenders, because the nominations this year were pretty stale. The West Wing? The Sopranos? Two and a Half Men????? Actually, the most interesting thing about your nominations was what was missing. Herewith, a list of my criticisms. Maybe you should let me pick the contenders next year?

Best Drama series: Sopranos? Please, do we really need to see that show (and its weakest season) nominated again? Ditto for The West Wing. Hey Emmy Elders – the show was cancelled, deal with it. I was suprised not to see Lost nominated, although it was only a mediocre season. I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I toast you for exluding Desperate Housewives,, one of the stupidist shows on TV. But where’s Veronica Mars? Gilmore Girls? Too girly for you? Then next year try Rescue Me or Battlestar Gallactica.

Comedy Series: Nominating Arrested Development is a good idea in theory. It was a clever, well-written show, and deserves a nomination. But, see West Wing notation above, and let’s see if we can save some spots for shows still on the air. Good call on Scrubs, even though the show has gotten a little full of itself lately. Can this show just win already? Why don’t you nominate How I Met Your Mother next year? It’s one of the funniest shows on television.

Actors (drama and comedy)
: Regarding Peter Krause and Martin Sheen, again, please let’s stick to characters that still exist on television. Yay for the Denis Leary nom! Go Denis! But Kevin James for King of Queens? Is that show still even on the air? Has anyone ever noticed him before? Although I don’t necessarily approve of the Two and a Half Men nomination, if we’re going to go there, I’ll admit that I think Charlie Sheen is funny. But why is Jon Cryer relegated to the supporting category? And where is Zach Braff?

Actress (drama and comedy): While I find Kyra Sedgwick a little over the top, I still enjoy watching her, so good call on her nom. Regarding Lisa Kudrow…well, you know how I feel about that. The show was cancelled. Hell, it wasn’t even on that long. Debra Messing? No one was happier than me when Will & Grace was cancelled, so perhaps I’m not the right person to ask. The nomination of Stockard Channing for Out of Practice is interesting. Personally, I kind of liked the show, but it didn’t last long, and you’re telling me there was no one else to slip in there? Where is Lauren Graham? Because she deserves not only a nomination, but a win.

Ok, that’s it for now. But expect me to continue to weigh in. I truly feel that I could help you. Talk soon.

Sincerely,
